Kimbo’s new adventure – his 21-day rehab stint begins Monday
Kimbo was supposed to begin a 21-day rehab stint Monday in Manitou Springs, Colorado. Instead, he will begin training at an undisclosed location in Albuquerque.
SANTA FE, N.M. —
Last week, there was fear that Kimbo, a 3-year-old Great Pyrenees, could be euthanized because officials at the Santa Fe Animal Shelter couldn’t find a match for the dog, in part because Kimbo had behavioral issues.
Wade Carlson visits the shelter on a regular basis. He saw something in Kimbo.
“He was just this sweet, happy, loving dog. And they were telling me ‘there’s two different Kimbos. You’re only seeing one Kimbo,'” Carlson said. “But that was all I saw. That dog was definitely worth saving.”
Carlson spoke with shelter officials and learned more about Kimbo’s history. They worked together to try and find a new home for Kimbo.
“He does have some triggers,” said Carlson. “But what it appears to me is that he’s more protective than aggressive.”
On Friday, officials at the shelter found a match. Carlson picked Kimbo up with the intention of dropping him off at a rehab center in Manitou Springs, Colorado. Then the plan changed.
Instead, Kimbo begins a 21-day rehab stint on Monday, at an undisclosed center in Albuquerque.
“They didn’t want 100 people calling in and saying ‘you know I had a Great Pyrenees and this is what worked for my dog,'” Carlson said. “They said they wanted to remain focused on Kimbo and not get distracted on these other things.”
Kimbo’s road to rehab won’t be complete once he completes his 21-day program. Carlson says Kimbo will require follow-up training sessions for at least three months. There is hope that Kimbo will find a forever home.
“We already have quite a few people who have stepped forward that are interested in adopting him or fostering him,” Carlson said. “We can’t really choose the right person until we get the results from his training. The last thing we want to do is put him in another home where it doesn’t work out.”
