Kacey Musgraves might’ve cracked a joke or two about how the risqué lyrics of “Dry Spell” could send her grandmother to the grave.
But in a new interview with Variety, the singer reveals that her grandmother — the woman Musgraves calls Nana — really did suffer a health emergency while she was in the middle of filming the song’s equally bawdy music video.
“Actually, in the middle of filming the video, I got a text from my dad that Nana had to be rushed to the hospital,” the singer reveals. “She had a really scary extreme high blood pressure incident.”
“So I had to leave and I was on this call crying, like, ‘If Nana lives, she’s going to hate this video!'” Musgraves remembers.

Musgraves’ fans have gotten to know her beloved Nana, Barbara Musgraves, over the course of her career.
She appeared in the singer’s Christmas special, the Kacey Musgraves Christmas Show, in 2019. Nana also inspired the lyric “Grandma cried when I pierced my nose” in Musgraves’ hit song “Slow Burn.”
Fortunately, Musgraves tells Variety that Nana recovered after her health emergency. “She’s doing great — I saw her this morning,” she says.

Musgraves says that Nana has heard “Dry Spell” and knows what the lyrics are about, but hasn’t yet seen the music video.
“I don’t know if she’ll laugh,” the singer admits.

She also pointed out one particular line in “Dry Spell” that’s about masturbation, saying that it’s a standout line for her even if her grandmother’s not thrilled by the subject matter.
“I’ve never talked about self-pleasure before. So that’s a first for me: ‘Sitting on the washing machine.’ It’s not my grandmother’s favorite line, but it’s mine, I guess,” Musgraves says.
