Judge sentences man to life in prison for double murder in 2017



Aug. 26, 2017, Taron Lavelle Watkins shot and killed two people, one of them a 16-year-old girl.

CHANDLER, Ariz. — A man who shot and killed two people in Chandler in 2017 has been sentenced to serve life in prison, according to officials.

The Maricopa County Attorney’s Office announced the sentencing for Taron Lavelle Watkins, 29, on May 13 following his conviction earlier this year.

Officials said on Aug. 26, 2017, Watkins shot and killed two people, one of them a 16-year-old girl. A third person was also injured in the shooting that happened near Elliot Road and Arizona Avenue

On April 11 of this year Watkins was found guilty of the following:

  • 2 counts of first-degree murder 
  • 1 count of attempted first-degree murder
  • 1 count of aggravated assault

“This has been a difficult case that has taken years to bring to justice. I commend the prosecutors who have worked arduously on behalf of the victims and their families to ensure this violent offender is held accountable,” said County Attorney Rachel Mitchell. 

Watkins’ sentencing breaks down as follows: 

  • Count 1 – first-degree murder – natural Life
  • Count 2- first-degree murder – natural Life (consecutive to count 1)
  • Count 3 – attempted first-degree murder – 10.5 years in prison (consecutive to count 2)
  • Count 4 – aggravated Assault – 7.5 years in prison (concurrent with count 3)
