Joel Osteen Mourns the Death of His Beloved Mother Dolores at 91

Date:

Joel Osteen is mourning the loss of his beloved mother, Dolores “Dodie” Osteen.

Known affectionately as “Mama Dodie” to the Lakewood Church community, the church co-founder passed away due to natural causes. She was 91.

Joel announced her passing in a heartfelt message shared to X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday (July 30).

“Mama Dodie”: A Mother, a Matriarch, a Miracle

“It is with a heavy heart that Victoria and I, along with our family, announce the passing of our cherished mother and grandmother, Dolores ‘Dodie’ Osteen,” Joel began.

“She was the beloved matriarch of Lakewood Church, an inspiration to millions of people around the world, and a faithful servant of God,” he continued.

A Life of Faith and Resilience

Dolores co-founded Lakewood Church alongside her husband, Pastor John Osteen, in the back of an old feed store in Houston on Mother’s Day in 1959.

Together, the faith-driven couple built what would become one of the largest evangelical churches in the country. For years, they hosted a weekly television program that could be seen in over 100 countries.

Mama Dodie also authored several books, including Healed of Cancer, which details her miraculous recovery from metastatic liver cancer after being given weeks to live by doctors in 1981.

Even after her husband died in 1999, she remained a steadfast part of the church as their youngest son, Joel, took over and led Lakewood into global prominence.

Her Legacy Lives On

Joel described his mother’s life as “amazing” and her legacy as “lasting,” reflecting the deep love and admiration she inspired throughout her lifetime.

She is survived by four children, dozens of grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and a worldwide community of believers who knew her as a spiritual guide and source of unwavering faith.

As the family grieves, they’ve expressed gratitude for the outpouring of prayers and support from around the world.

Remembering ‘Mama Dodie’

To generations of Lakewood members and TV viewers, Mama Dodie wasn’t just a pastor’s wife or Joel’s mom — she was a pillar of strength.

As Joel shared in his announcement, this is a time to honor her life, not just mourn her passing.

“Known as ‘Mama Dodie’ to the entire Lakewood family, together, we celebrate her amazing life and lasting legacy,” he added.

A Family History of Strength

The Osteen family has long been at the heart of American evangelical life.

Under Joel’s leadership, Lakewood Church moved into Houston’s former NBA arena and now reaches millions through its broadcasts and live services.

A suspect was initially charged, but the case is now under renewed investigation.
