Friends, fraternity brothers remember Jimmy Gracey during memorial Mass at the University of Alabama
Students at the University of Alabama are leaning on each other as they cope with the loss of junior Jimmy Gracey, who died in Barcelona nearly a week ago.Emotions remain raw on campus following a memorial Mass held Monday at St. Francis of Assisi Chapel, where friends, classmates, and loved ones gathered to pray and honor Gracey’s life.Gracey was the chapter chaplain of his fraternity, Theta Chi. Those who gathered said Gracey’s legacy will live on through the people he touched, and in the kindness they say he left behind. Even people who didn’t know him are leaning on their faith as this devastating loss has shaken the whole campus.”The campus is feeling a big tragedy right now,” Meagan Carney, a student at The University of Alabama, said. “I mean, you walk around school and it’s a completely different feeling than I’ve felt before. I see some of the men in the fraternities hugging each other and crying at times where they are holding pictures of him and some notes and stuff like that. So, I think it’s just a feeling that I’ve never seen here before.”His fraternity brothers at Theta Chi continue to honor his life today, holding a vigil at their fraternity house Tuesday at 7 p.m.Many of Gracey’s fraternity brothers aided in search efforts until his body was found Thursday, the organization said.An initial examination of the body indicates Gracey drowned, according to Spanish newspaper El Periodico. Police believe that foul play has been ruled out and support the conclusion of a tragic accident.Security camera footage from Port Olímpic and witness accounts indicated he headed toward the water alone.
