SANDIA SPORTS BOOK. WE ALL KNOW PLAYERS CAN BE PROMOTED FROM THE MINOR LEAGUES TO THE MAJORS, BUT THIS TIME AROUND, THE CALL CAME TO THE GUY BEHIND THE MIC. LONGTIME TOPES BROADCASTER JOSH SOUCHON FILLED IN THE RADIO BOOTH THIS WEEKEND FOR A PAIR OF COLORADO ROCKIES GAMES. HE’S BEEN THE RADIO PLAY BY PLAY ANNOUNCER FOR THE TOPES FOR 12 SEASONS. HE TOLD US IT’S HARD TO FIND JOBS IN HIS INDUSTRY, AND AFTER GETTING HIS FIRST BROADCASTING GIG BACK IN 1996, HE CONSIDERS THIS WEEKEND’S OPPORTUNITY A BREAKTHROUGH, BUT NOT THE FINISH LINE. I’M REALLY GRATEFUL FOR THIS OPPORTUNITY AND I’M GOING TO HAVE A LOT OF FUN. BUT THIS IS NOT THE DREAM. THE DREAM IS NOT TO FILL IN FOR TWO GAMES. THE DREAM IS TO DO 162 GAMES YEAR AFTER YEAR AFTER YEAR. THIS WAS THE FIRST JOB THAT I GOT OUT OF COLLEGE, WAS DOING MINOR LEAGUE BASEBALL PLAY BY PLAY, AND THE GOAL WAS TO REACH THE MAJOR LEAGUES. SOUCHON EVENTUALLY WENT INTO PRINT AFTER BEGINNING HIS CAREER IN RADIO BACK IN 1996, AND STAYED IN THE NEWSPAPER BUSINESS FOR TEN YEARS BEFORE RETURNING TO THE RADIO BOOTH. HE’S CALLED MORE THAN 1600 TOPES GAMES, AND SAYS THE CALL
