British heavy metal pioneers Iron Maiden have shared a heartfelt tribute to their original vocalist, Paul Mario Day, who passed away earlier this week at the age of 69 following a prolonged battle with cancer. Day, a key figure in the early formation of the legendary band in 1975, also made his mark in groups like More, Wildfire, and Sweet over the course of his career.
In a statement shared via social media, Iron Maiden honored their former bandmate:
“We are deeply saddened that Paul Mario Day, Iron Maiden‘s first ever vocalist back in 1975, has passed away. Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences go out to Paul‘s family and friends. Paul was a lovely person and good mate. Rest in peace Paul.”
Though his time with Iron Maiden was brief, Day played an important role in the band’s earliest days, helping shape their direction during their formative period under bassist and founder Steve Harris. After parting ways with Iron Maiden, Day went on to front the influential New Wave of British Heavy Metal band More — famously performing at the first Monsters of Rock festival in 1980 — and later joined Wildfire and Sweet, further establishing himself as a powerful and respected voice in the UK hard rock and metal scene.
Sweet guitarist Andy Scott and fellow More bandmates also issued tributes earlier this week, reflecting on Day‘s legacy as a passionate, charismatic performer whose voice left a lasting impression on fans and collaborators alike.
Paul Mario Day’s contributions remain woven into the early fabric of Iron Maiden’s story and into the wider history of British metal. His influence and spirit will be remembered by fans, musicians, and the community that first embraced him nearly five decades ago.
