Innovative eatery is a finalist for ‘Best Hotdog’ in the Country
Sunday midnight will reveal the top dog: Albuquerque-based Urban Hot Dog or Yesterdog from Grand Rapids, MI.
After 14 years in business, Urban Hot Dog owner Matthew Bernabe has managed to survive by being creative, ambitious, and down-to-earth at the same time. His business has been featured on the Food Network and the Cooking Channel, but now he’s competing at the pinnacle of the hot dog world; up against the veteran, better known as “Yesterdog,” a company based in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The tournament is called, “The64,” and the format is like a March Madness bracket. The eatery making its way from the round of 64 to the championship round.”We’re definitely a Cinderella story,” Bernabe said. “I think that’s kind of New Mexico, where we’re always seen as underdogs, and it’s exciting to be part of it. I think Albuquerque, New Mexico, as a whole gets overlooked, especially for our food scene. We have some amazing food out here across the state, so just being able to shine a light on that and put green chili on the top, I think, is something that we’re here for.” Whether the underdog could be crowned the top dog will be known when the votes are counted at midnight Sunday. “So Monday morning, hopefully we’re holding the first-place medal in that show and our dogs are best in show, and you know we’re here and we’re here to stay,” Bernabe said. There is no windfall for the winner, and that’s fine with him.”If and when we win, hopefully, it’s just bragging rights,” Bernabe said. “You get the stamp of approval, ‘best hot dog in America,’ and I don’t think a monetary prize would compare to that.”Voting ends on midnight Sunday, April 12.
