Inmate’s assault of cellmate brings sentence of 19 1/2 years
Victim suffered “catastrophic” injuries in 2021 from Corey Dixon at Curry County Adult Detention Center.
A life-threatening assault of a 63-year-old inmate at the Curry County Adult Detention Center in 2021 resulted in his former cellmate being sentenced Friday to 19 1/2 years in prison. According to a news release from the Ninth Judicial District Attorney’s Office, Corey Dixon, 26, was convicted by a jury of attempt to commit murder by deliberate killing and possession of a deadly weapon by a prisoner. The jury was presented with evidence that detention officers had found Michael Bradley, who was legally blind, badly injured and covered with blood after Dixon beat him in the cell they shared. Bradley was airlifted to Plains Regional Medical Center Lubbock, Texas, with severe head trauma, brain bleeds, and significant injuries to both eyes, the release said. Surveillance video seen at the trial showed Dixon punching and choking Bradley, hitting him with his walking cane, and stomping on Bradley’s head while he was lying on the floor. According to witness testimony, Dixon was angry about having to share a cell with Bradley, the release said.”This was a deeply violent attack against a vulnerable victim who could not defend himself,” District Attorney Quentin Ray said in the release. “The injuries were severe, and Mr. Bradly never fully recovered from the damages he suffered before his passing in December 2024. The 19 1/2 year sentence reflects accountability and brings a measure of justice for the victim and his family.”
