Luke Bryan‘s “Country Song Came On” was originally written for Blake Shelton, but made its way to Bryan first.
Bryan decided not to let Shelton have it after hearing it.
He tells Taste of Country Nights the story of how it all unfolded, and how he ended up cutting the song instead.
“When I got the demo, the guy’s voice on the demo had a lot of similarities to Blake’s voice,” Bryan explains.
“I’m not sure if it had got to Blake, but it was something that I really rolled around in my truck and loved and fell in love with,” he explains.

So he heard it and loved it — he could hear himself singing it.
“Had it been something that it wasn’t for me, I probably would have text Blake and said, ‘Hey man, I hear a song that really feels like something special for you.'”
But that’s not how it went down. Bryan felt a connection to the song, so he decided to hang onto it. He knew it’d work well for him and his style.

Don’t worry, there’s no bad blood whatsoever — Bryan and Shelton are longtime great friends. They love to fire friendly shots at one another, and that’s what happened when we asked Bryan if the song would have been a hit had Shelton gotten to it first.
Bryan chuckled and said: “It’d sound like barely a Top 20 [hit] with Blake” on it.
