Herrell confirmed as Agriculture Dept. assistant secretary
Former congresswoman will manage USDA relations with Capital Hill lawmakers
Yvette Herrell, who represented New Mexico’s 2nd Congressional District from 2021-23, was confirmed Thursday night by the U.S. Senate as Assistant Secretary of Agriculture for Congressional Affairs by a 53-43 vote, a Republican Party of New Mexico news release said.As assistant secretary, Herrell will act as the liaison between the USDA and Congress on legislation, budgets and policy priorities. Herrell, a Republican, sought to return as the 2nd District’s representative in the 2024 election, but lost to incumbent Rep. Gabe Vasquez in a repeat of the 2022 outcome.”We are thrilled for Yvette and cannot wait to see her serve in the Trump administration,” said Amy Barela, RPNM chair. “Her deep roots in Southern New Mexico give her a firsthand understanding of the agricultural, rural, and economic issues facing our state, making her exceptionally well-suited to serve in this role.”
