A surge of monsoon moisture continues to bring cloudy cover and rain to parts of New Mexico. Storm chances will continue across parts of the state into the end of the week.
Cloudy skies limited the rainfall in parts of central New Mexico, however there still have been a few, light sprinkles through the day. Where there’s been more sunshine along and east of the central mountain chain along with western New Mexico, more thunderstorms have developed this afternoon. Showers and storms will continue in parts of New Mexico through late tonight with a couple sprinkles stick around into Wednesday morning in parts of southern and northern New Mexico.
If we get more sunshine Wednesday afternoon there will be more afternoon showers and storms. That’s the current thinking across New Mexico. Storms will be capable of heavy rain, so there will be a higher risk of flash flooding. The highest risk will be in northeast and east-central New Mexico where a backdoor cold front will bring in even higher moisture.
Afternoon storm chances will continue across much of New Mexico through Friday, with parts of northwest and southeast New Mexico staying the driest. Much drier air will start moving into the state Saturday, bringing fewer showers and storms. By Sunday, the state will be nearly dry with a spotty storm or two over mountain peaks. Temperatures will be heating up as well. Dry and hot weather will stick around into early next week.
