Heat continues with spotty rain chances

Date:

Very hot temperatures with possible record highs continue across New Mexico this week. Spotty showers and thunderstorm chances will stick around this week as well.

It was another very hot afternoon across New Mexico with several places getting very closer to record high temperatures thanks to a record strong area of high pressure parked over the southern part of the state. Scattered showers and storms also developed across the state today, with a mix of wet and dry storms. This means that some of the rain has been evaporating before reaching the ground. Most of the rain has ended tonight.

Thursday will be a near carbon copy kind of day with more record to near-record heat with a few scattered showers and storms. Heat Advisories go into effect again Thursday afternoon for the Metro, Farmington, and southeastern New Mexico. Record and near-record heat will return again Friday afternoon, but there will be fewer afternoon showers and storms.

The record strong area of high pressure will start to break down this weekend, allowing temperatures to cool off a few degrees. This will also allow for a little more monsoon moisture to creep northward into the state. High temperatures are going to stay above average through much of next week as well. But more moisture will be pushing northward into New Mexico bringing a better chance for afternoon showers and storms.
