Swedish death metal unit Grand Cadaver is set to return on August 15 with their new EP The Rot Beneath, out via Majestic Mountain Records. The release will arrive alongside a limited vinyl reissue of their 2021 debut album Into the Maw of Death. Though you don’t have to wait anymore – we’re streaming The Rot Beneath right now in all its morbid Swedish glory!
Formed in 2020 during the pandemic lockdown, Grand Cadaver brings together a line-up of seasoned veterans from Gothenburg and Stockholm’s metal scene: vocalist Mikael Stanne (Dark Tranquillity, The Halo Effect), guitarists Stefan Lagergren (The Grifted, ex-Treblinka, ex-Tiamat) and Alex Stjernfeldt (Novarupta, Child), bassist Christian Jansson (Pagandom, Dark Tranquillity) and drummer Daniel Liljekvist (Disrupted, Vorder, ex-Katatonia). Which should give you an idea of just how good this band is.
Grand Cadaver made an immediate impact with their 2021 debut EP Madness Comes, recorded in just three days and hitting #9 on the Swedish physical charts. That same year saw the release of Into the Maw of Death, praised for its raw, HM-2-fuelled take on old-school Swedish death metal.
In 2023, Grand Cadaver followed up with Deities of Deathlike Sleep, blending ferocious riffing with a doom-inflected atmosphere, and made their long-awaited live debut in Gothenburg. All of these should be on your listening list for the day, by the way.
Speaking about the new EP, Grand Cadaver said: “When you look at the state of the world today, it’s difficult not to feel despair. We see madness, death, war, corruption and polarisation. And it makes you think, what are we if not the cause of the problem, what are we but the rot beneath? This is the anthem to mankind’s demise.”
