Gila National Forest offering free Trout Fire wood chips

NEW MEXICO (KRQE) – Gila National Forest officials are giving away wood chips that were created during efforts to fight the Trout Fire earlier this summer. Forest officials say they have free wood chips available at several locations in the forest.

The chips were created when trees, branches, and brush were cut along roadsides to reduce fuel for the Trout Fire. The chip piles will be available at the following locations:

  • New Mexico Highway 15 at the Ben Lilly Memorial parking area north of Piños Altos, north of MM10
  • Meadow Creek Road turnout (Forest Road 149 just of MM 15)
  • roadside pullout at Wildhorse Mesa south of MM 22
  • NM Highway 35 in the Celebration Campground area (Forest Road 88 at Skates Canyon, mile 18.5
