As the metal world continues to mourn the death of Ozzy Osbourne, Swedish metal unit Ghost delivered one of the most powerful tributes yet, dedicating their entire Madison Square Garden performance to the late icon. The concert, held Tuesday night, July 22, in New York City, came just hours after news broke that the Prince of Darkness had passed away at age 76.
In front of a sold-out crowd at one of the world’s most legendary venues, Ghost frontman Papa V Perpetua paused the show before launching into “The Future Is a Foreign Land” to acknowledge the immense loss.
“We’re going to dedicate tonight’s show to the memory of the life and laughter of Ozzy Osbourne,” Papa V Perpetua said to thunderous applause and chants of “Ozzy! Ozzy! Ozzy!” He added: “For being the Prince Of Darkness, he sure gave us a lot of light, so we’re gonna tap into that tonight and carry it forward through a time of darkness.”
The emotional moment served as a reminder that Ozzy‘s legacy extends far beyond his music — it’s also the joy, energy, and inspiration he brought to countless musicians and fans across generations. For a band like Ghost, whose theatrical stagecraft and dark aesthetic are direct descendants of Ozzy‘s own pioneering style, the tribute was both a gesture of gratitude and a passing of the torch.
Just weeks earlier, on July 5, Tobias Forge had stood side by side with rock and metal royalty at Back To The Beginning — Ozzy‘s final concert, held at Villa Park in Birmingham, the city where his legendary journey began. Forge performed a haunting rendition of “Bark At The Moon,” Ozzy‘s classic from 1983, backed by a supergroup lineup featuring Vernon Reid (Living Colour), Nuno Bettencourt (Extreme), Adam Wakeman (Ozzy Osbourne), Rudy Sarzo (Quiet Riot, Ozzy Osbourne), and Travis Barker (Blink-182).
That moment, now seen as part of Ozzy‘s final chapter, became even more meaningful in the context of Ghost‘s MSG performance — a full-circle tribute from one of the genre’s brightest torchbearers to the man who helped light the fire.
