The government shutdown has hit day 36, now the longest on record, and Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy warned Tuesday what travelers could soon be facing. “You will see mass flight delays,” he said. “You’ll see mass cancellations. And you may see us close certain parts of the airspace, because we just cannot manage it, because we don’t have the air-traffic controllers.”
That’s to say nothing of the potential for a crash or other mishap. “There is a level of risk that gets injected into the system when we have a controller that’s doing two jobs instead of one,” Mr. Duffy told ABC on Sunday. The Federal Aviation Administration said Wednesday that it is ordering airline traffic reduced by 10% at 40 airports to relieve some of the pressure and the risk of mistakes.
