Free skin screenings given by UNM medical students

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – With summer right around the corner and the powerful sun here in the state, New Mexicans were encouraged to receive free skin cancer screenings earlier on Saturday. Several funds and dermatology organizations hosted the event, offering the screenings on a first-come, first-served basis.

No appointments were necessary, and UNM medical students even assisted in the screenings by giving attendees information about the risks of the sun and skin cancer. “Really, what we recommend is that people pay attention to their own skin, too. You know, if they notice something that is growing, bleeding, changing, not healing, they should definitely bring it up to their primary care doctor and see if it’s something that need to be seen by a dermatologist,” said Dr. John Durkin, MD, assistant professor at the UNM School of Dermatology.

Organizers of the event say the free screenings were in honor of Melanoma Month, which is observed in May.
