The National Weather Service in Albuquerque issued a flood warning in Socorro County Friday evening as runoff from multiple days of heavy rain made its way into the Rio Puerco.

“The Rio Puerco near Bernardo is forecast to reach Minor Flood Stage this evening and continue through the overnight hours,” the weather service announced in a statement. “A Flood Warning is in effect. Stay away from river banks and never drive through flooded roads!”

The unincorporated community of Bernardo sits at the convergence of the Rio Puerco and the Rio Grande, about 30 miles north of the city of Socorro.

The flood warning was scheduled to be effective until about 8:30 a.m. on Saturday.

Socorro County has been a flashpoint for flooding amid recent storms.

Highway 60 from Socorro west to the village of Magdalena remains closed after heavy rains damaged a bridge, and emergency flash flood warnings were issued last weekend amid downpours that prompted rescue efforts.
