Clean up efforts begin after historic floods hit northern New Mexico and a tornado hit Santa Fe and damaged several homes.

Officials are working to make evacuated areas in San Juan County safe.

The tornado that hit Santa Fe on Saturday was the first since at least 1991 to strike the city, according to National Weather Service records.

What we are following today:

San Juan County Flood Update

Crews have reported no additional rescues have been performed in the last 24 hours in San Juan County as rivers continue to recede.

Emergency crews are working on secondary searches in areas that have evacuation orders to ensure that those areas do not have people who weren’t evacuated.

Officials say all evacuated areas are still closed due to the the hazards posed in the areas.

Evacuation Status

McGee Park is still operating as a shelter. There is still room available for those who need shelter.

Status of Utilities

All sewer and wastewater systems are functional and operational and all drinking water is safe.

Private water wells could be contaminated by flooding and support has been requested from the state for water well testing.

There are 500 power outages reported and those outages could take several days before restoration happens. Crews are working to inspect electric infrastructure to ensure safety. Crews are turning power off or removing meters if damage was sustained on the customer side of the power meter.

New Mexico Gas has limited outages for residential gas customers. Once evacuees are able to return home and suspect a gas leak, customers are directed to call NM Gas or 911.

Dams and lakes

Navajo Lake is at 64% capacity and has 53 feet of storage. Navajo Dam is safe and secure with releases of 250 cubic feet per second, which is the minimum for safe operations.

Electra Lake and Lake Nighthorse are both safe and not releasing water at this time.

Recovery efforts

Additional resources for recovery will become available in the coming days.

Call 211 for resources, volunteers and donations.
