Fix-It-Clinic helps people hold on to precious items

“If we’re able to take something apart and figure out that one thing and fix it, then you save yourself from buying a whole new $200 appliance,” said FUSE Makerspace Director Jeff Debillis.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. —

A lot of near and dear household goods found a way to avoid a trip to the trash, thanks in part to Saturday’s Fix-It-Clinic in Albuquerque.

More than 230 residents teamed up with volunteer repair experts at FUSE Makerspace to fix over 400 items. Those who participated learned new ways to extend the life of clothes, jewelry, electronics, or small appliances.

“We have such a disposable culture where if something breaks, it’s just so easy to throw it away,” said FUSE Makerspace Director Jeff Debillis. “If we’re able to take something apart, figure out that one thing and fix it, then you save yourself from buying a whole new $200 appliance.”

FUSE Makerspace holds two Fix-It-Clinic events each year, in conjunction with Keep Albuquerque Beautiful and the City of Albuquerque Solid Waste Management Department.
