Today, a federal judge dismissed a lawsuit filed by the Department of Justice to obtain the personal and protected information of New Mexico voters.The lawsuit, previously filed back in December 2025, was requested by the Trump administration along with 14 other states, accusing them of withholding information and not complying with election integrity standards.Secretary of State Maggie Toulouse Oliver openly spoke out against the lawsuit, previously stating that protecting the privacy rights of New Mexico voters was important. She also issued a statement today after the lawsuit was dismissed, stating, “I am pleased with the court’s decision to dismiss this case. Federal and state legal guardrails on social security numbers and dates of birth exist for the identity protection of every voter in our state. I absolutely will not risk any disclosure of voters’ private data, as it could carry very real and severe consequences for the personal lives of New Mexicans participating in our democratic process.”The court says they found that the DOJ’s Demand Letter fails because it altogether lacks an identifiable “basis.”The federal U.S. Department of Justice has failed to receive any unredacted voter data through similar lawsuits, with the courts blocking 14 similar cases in other states.
