Witnesses describe fatal Albuquerque crash that killed bicyclist
Police say a bicyclist was killed in Albuquerque in late June after a driver allegedly struck him while turning onto Central Avenue. Witnesses told investigators the driver appeared to target the cyclists, and officers reported signs of impairment at the scene.
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. —
A bicyclist was killed in Albuquerque in late June after a driver allegedly struck him near Central Avenue and Maple Street, police said.
Authorities said Brent Curley hit Maykel Garcia while turning east onto Central. Witnesses told investigators Curley allegedly revved his engine before cutting between the two cyclists and running over Garcia.
“That Explorer, um, he made a, he made a right, but he swerved all the way into the bus lane to try and hit the bicyclist guy,” the witness said to police. “Like, it looked like it was almost on purpose.”
The witness went on to describe the moments after the impact.
“He started rolling underneath, like kind of like, like, like four-wheeling on top of him, and then he gunned it some more to get over him,” the witness said. “And then, and then I yelled and screamed.”
Officers at the scene said Curley had slurred speech, smelled of alcohol and had an open container in the vehicle.
Curley faces multiple charges, including homicide by vehicle and driving while intoxicated.
