Estancia mayor pro-tem removed from position amid court case
The Estancia town board of trustees removed Mayor Pro Tem Amy May from her position during a meeting on Tuesday, appointing Martin Lucero to take her place.
May had been facing a warrant for her arrest after failing to appear in court on two charges of the unlawful sale of alcoholic beverages. A judge canceled the warrant after May appeared in court, where she paid a fee to have a public defender appointed. She is scheduled to return to court next month.
While May was removed as mayor pro-tem, she will retain her position on the board of trustees.
“We need somebody to be able to take calls and be there in the event the mayor cannot be there,” a board member said.
Lucero, who currently serves on the board, will now assume the responsibilities of mayor pro-tem.
