Drier air will bring a break in monsoon moisture across most of New Mexico into the weekend. Rain chances will increase again early next week.
Heavy rain over burn scars again caused destructive flash flooding in the Ruidoso area this afternoon. Flash Flood Warnings were in effect until 3:30 PM. Other Flash Flood Warnings were also in effect for other parts of New Mexico this afternoon. Showers and storms are ending tonight with drier air moving in.
Storms will again develop along the central mountain chain and the northern mountains early Friday afternoon. They will then move to the east, northeast into the afternoon and evening, but they will not last long once they’re off the higher elevations. Rain totals will be much lower than what we’ve seen today. High temperatures will be up to near and above average for this time of year.
Even drier air will move into New Mexico Saturday. Only a couple spotty showers will develop across the peaks of the northern mountains. High temperatures will be above average statewide. Some monsoon moisture will start moving back into the state Sunday, bringing a spotty storm chance to parts of southern New Mexico, but most areas will stay dry. Temperatures will stay hot.
More monsoon moisture will stream into the state early next week, bringing scattered showers and thunderstorms to the western half of New Mexico finally. Northwest New Mexico has largely missed out on the monsoon moisture so far this season, but that will change by next Wednesday. Meanwhile, Eastern New Mexico will stay dry.
