Santa Fe city officials have announced that demolition has begun for a former school in Santa Fe.Saint Catherine’s Indian School suffered damage last week after a fire was started at the former school, heavily damaging areas like the dormitories and the chapel. Anthony Allen Dault was taken into custody as a result, but the cause of the fire has not been officially determined. Officials announced that demolition of the fire-damaged building began Friday, and crews are working to safely remove unstable portions of the structure. They say the demolition is a critical step in allowing investigators from the New Mexico State Fire Marshal’s Office and other agencies to safely access the site to determine the cause and origin of the fire. The sections of the remaining walls pose a significant safety hazard. For the safety of the public and demolition crews, the Santa Fe Police Department says they have established and are maintaining a wide security perimeter around the site.Members of the public are urged to avoid the area and obey all road closures, barricades, and instructions from law enforcement personnel.
