Cynic has just unveiled Focus, The Official Drum and Bass Tracks, an exclusive Bandcamp release that strips their landmark debut down to its rhythmic essence. For the first time ever, fans can experience the isolated performances of bassist Sean Malone and drummer Sean Reinert, offering a rare glimpse into the foundation of one of progressive metal’s most influential records.
Cynic guitarist and founding member Paul Masvidal shared the significance of the release: “These tracks let you sit inside what feels like an intimate conversation between two master musicians. Malone and Reinert created a foundation that remains vividly alive, existing in its own realm. This release honors their legacy and offers a glimpse into the heartbeat that carried Focus. And for drummers and bass players out there, it is a master class in progressive metal rhythm section work from true visionaries.”
Malone and Reinert, who both tragically passed away in recent years, are celebrated not only for their technical brilliance but also for the chemistry and innovation that defined Cynic‘s sound.
Originally released in 1993, Focus broke boundaries with its seamless fusion of technical death metal, jazz fusion, and atmospheric experimentation. Featuring intricate time signatures, philosophical lyrics, and pioneering use of vocoder vocals, the record became a touchstone for generations of progressive and extreme metal musicians. Nearly three decades later, its influence continues to resonate.
The release of Focus, The Official Drum and Bass Tracks coincides with Bandcamp Friday — a fan-favorite initiative launched in March 2020 when live music shut down during the pandemic. On these days, Bandcamp waives its revenue share, ensuring artists and labels receive the full support of fan purchases. Since its inception, Bandcamp Fridays have generated over $120 million directly for artists and labels, becoming a vital lifeline and a rallying point for music communities worldwide. Get it here.
