WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Curtis Mead left his first game with the Boston Red Sox after being hit on the left wrist by a pitch in a 4-2 victory over the Athletics.
Mead struck out looking in the first at-bat of his Boston debut Monday night and was struck on the wrist by A’s starter Jack Perkins in the fourth inning. Mead tried to shake off the pain but exited the contest after being checked by the Red Sox’s trainer. In the eighth inning, the club announced that Mead had been diagnosed with a left wrist contusion.
Red Sox manager Chad Tracy said X-rays were negative, adding that it “looks like we dodged a bullet, maybe.” Mead will undergo more tests on Tuesday.
“I felt OK. Squeezing my hand feels OK. Just a little bit of pain rotating,” Mead said after the win. “We were able to get an X-ray, and everything looked OK. So, I’m hopeful that I will feel better tomorrow morning and that it won’t be a problem.”
The Red Sox acquired the infielder on Saturday in a trade that sent left-hander Connelly Early to the Washington Nationals. After the win, Mead did admit to being deflated that his first game resulted in an early exit.
“I was super disappointed,” Mead said. “I wanted to come here and help the team, and I wanted to play. So, yeah, it’s frustrating.”
Mead is hitting .253 with 17 home runs and 48 RBIs this season.
“I went in after the inning was over and I grabbed a bat, because hitting was going to be my main concern,” Mead said. “And I tried to swing it, and it didn’t really feel great. So, that was probably the main concern.”
He was replaced Monday by Anthony Seigler, who finished 0-for-2.
