Clovis man convicted of child abuse after shooting daughter

CLOVIS, N.M. (KRQE) – A Clovis man who shot his daughter has been convicted of child abuse charges. In July 2023, Jeffrey Smiley shot at his ex-wife’s vehicle after learning in court earlier in the day that their divorce had been finalized and he would not be allowed to see his seven-year-old daughter. His daughter was hit and severely injured but survived. There were other children in the vehicle as well.

A sentencing date has not been set.
