Cheers for Team USA turn to jeers for Vance at opening ceremony

Date:

There are dozens of dignitaries and VIPs in Milan tonight to represent their countries at the opening ceremony. We’ve seen security get increasingly tight today just like what we’re seeing here outside the Hotel Excelsior Gallia. This is where cameras have caught US Vice President JD Vance arriving. Vance is in Italy with his wife and two of his kids to cheer on athletes and also to represent the United States alongside Secretary of State Marco Rubio. The police presence around this hotel stretches for blocks. Our hotel is about *** half mile from here, and we’ve seen the motorcade driving through the neighborhood for the last couple of days as Vance and his family have made. Their way around Milan. Those are electronic blockades that actually raise and lower to allow traffic right up to the front of the hotel. They just put those back up, not allowing anyone to get too terribly close there. JD Vance has said that his wife is not *** huge sports fan, but every 2 years, like the rest of us, she turns into *** major Olympics fan at the Milan Cortina Olympics. I’m Deirdre Fitzpatrick.

American athletes received an enthusiastic welcome at the opening ceremony for the Milan Cortina Winter Olympics, but the mood shifted when cameras briefly turned to Vice President JD Vance.Related video above: Security tightens in Milan as dignitaries arrive for Olympic opening ceremonyLed by speedskater and flag bearer Erin Jackson, Team USA was among the last delegations to enter Milan’s San Siro stadium in the parade of nations on Friday. The crowd cheered for the Americans but jeers and whistles could be heard as Vance and his wife, second lady Usha Vance, were shown on the stadium screens, waving American flags from the tribune.Support for the U.S. among its allies has been eroding as the Trump administration has taken an aggressive posture on foreign policy, including punishing tariffs, military action in Venezuela and threats to invade Greenland.Jeers also rang out when Israel’s delegation entered the stadium.Besides Milan, athlete parades were held in three other locations: Cortina d’Ampezzo, Livigno and Predazzo.
