Brexton Busch Returns to Racing Weeks After Kyle Busch’s Death

Kyle Busch‘s 11-year-old son Brexton competed in his first race since his father’s death on Monday (June 8) at Charlotte Motor Speedway, and finished sixth in the Young Lions division of the Cook Out Summer Shootout.

It has undoubtedly been a traumatic couple of weeks for the 11 year-old son of the late NASCAR champ, who died on May 21.

Brexton is a race car driver himself, just like his dad was, and he showed just how brave of a boy he is by getting back behind the wheel.

Brexton has been racing since he was only six years old. For a young boy to get behind the wheel of a car going well over 100mph is an impressive feat in itself, but to do it just weeks after losing a parent is frankly incredible.

How Did Kyle Busch Die?

Kyle Busch died on May 21 after a short hospitalization. He was 41 years old.

His cause of death was later revealed to be pneumonia that progressed into sepsis. Busch was testing a Chevrolet racing simulator in Concord, N.C., when he became very ill and was transported to a nearby hospital.

911 audio released by TMZ shows that an unnamed male caller told the dispatcher that the driver was “very hot,” experiencing shortness of breath and feeling like he was going to pass out. It also revealed that he was coughing up blood.

Brexton Busch’s Racing Career

Last year, Brexton won 48 races. He is already successful at racing and he has nothing but the open road ahead of him.

As a matter of fact, according to NASCAR, Richard Childress Racing, the team that Kyle Busch was racing for has decided to suspend the use of the iconic stylized No. 8. that Busch raced with.

Instead, the team is running the No. 33 for the remainder of the 2026 season and officially saving the No. 8 for Brexton, should he decide to race competitively on the NASCAR premiere series level.

What Kind of Cars Does Brexton Busch Race?

Brexton Busch races everything from legends cars and bandoleros, to micros, bandits, late models and sprint cars. His focus as of late has been legend cars and micro sprints, with legends becoming a bigger part of his schedule as he moves toward stock cars.
