Ahead of Brantley Gilbert‘s new album, Sins of the Father, which drops on July 24, I had a chance to sit down with the hitmaker on Taste of Country Nights with Evan Paul and ask him a few questions about his music.
Upon asking Gilbert if he loves hearing his own music on the radio when he is in the car, or in public, I learned that he has a pretty controversial stance on this exact thing.
Brantley Gilbert: Artists Who Listen to Themselves On Radio ‘Are Weird’
Gilbert tells me “Bro, I kinda have a rule, I don’t listen to myself on the radio unless it’s the first time. So the first time I hear the song on the radio I listen to it all the way through.”
But then he explains “And then if it happens again it’s just, bro, those dudes are weird. The guys who sit around and listen to themselves habitually… it’s strange, I don’t like it.”
Some Country Artists Love Listening To Their Own Music
Chris Young once told me on Taste of Country Nights with Evan Paul that hearing your songs on the radio is “the best feeling.” He continued, “I don’t care how many hits you have as an artist, I do not care, that never gets old, that’s so awesome. Anyone who says that’s not awesome sucks and they need to stop.”
Brantley Gilbert And Sam Hunt Share The Same Opinion
On the contrary to how Young feels, Gilbert and Sam Hunt both share the same perspective on listening to their own songs for pleasure.

Hunt said to me on Taste of Country Nights with Evan Paul “I don’t play any of my own music unless I’m listening to a new demo I just got back. It would be like watching a movie you were in or listening back for fun to your interviews or something, you don’t want to do that.”

I’ve heard the album. It is great. It blends hard-earned perspective with the grit and honesty that Gilbert built his career on. It offers a raw, reflective look at growth, redemption and the legacy we choose to leave behind.
