Ryder Boen, an 11-year-old from Oklahoma, experienced hearing clearly for the first time after receiving a cochlear implant from Hearts for Hearing, with his emotional reaction going viral online
Ryder Boen, an 11-year-old from Oklahoma, heard clearly for the first time in his life after receiving a cochlear implant from Hearts for Hearing, an organization dedicated to helping Oklahomans of all ages with hearing loss. His emotional response to hearing clearly for the first time has gone viral on social media, with the video garnering millions of views. “It was extremely exciting, all kinds of emotion at that point, and I was just very happy I was hearing,” Boen said. Sarah Boen, his mother, was in the room with him and shared in the emotional moment. “Just seeing it click in his head, like you could see the moment he realized it was working. And it was just, it was incredible and exciting and very emotional. We’re all crying,” she said. Darcy Stowe, CEO of Hearts for Hearing, explained the impact of cochlear implants. “What cochlear implants do is bypass the typical pattern of sound and give that information straight to the brain. Cochlear implants are actually the most successful neuroprosthetic, yet they’re widely underutilized. So we hope Ryder’s story helps to tell the success story for cochlear implants,” Stowe said. The implant has already made a significant difference in Boen’s life. “It was me hearing ten times better. You know, we have a frog on our front porch, and I’ve never heard a bullfrog, so I was in there, and I was like, Mom, ‘There’s a machine gun out there.’ I was just hearing … it sounded like a machine gun. She was like … ‘No, that’s not a machine gun.’ And I was like, ‘Yeah, it is. I’m pretty sure that’s a machine gun.’ And I was processing it in my mind. And she said, ‘Those are bullfrogs.’ I was like, ‘That’s what bullfrog sounds like?’ Yeah. I was just standing outside my door, just like having an emotional time just hearing the bullfrogs,” Boen said. Boen shared a message of encouragement for others, emphasizing the importance of embracing individuality.”My mind was always overworking to stay on track with other people. Sometimes people feel like being different is the worst thing. It’s not. Being different, it’s nothing wrong with it, it makes you, you. Yeah, it makes you, you, and I am happy that I am who I am,” he said.
