ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. —
A 63-year-old cyclist, Scott Habermehl, was struck and killed while riding his bike to work at Sandia National Labs in Albuquerque on May 29, 2024, in an incident involving four juveniles in a stolen car, one of whom recorded the event.
The video of the killing, which surfaced on social media months later, led investigators to identify the suspects and treat the case as a homicide rather than an accident.
“Our department is investigating the offense of homicide, which occurred on May 29th, 2024,” police said.
During police interrogations, the alleged 13-year-old driver was shown the video while his mother sat beside him.
“There’s no question about what we have,” police said.
Later in the interview, the teen denied responsibility, saying, “That’s what they’re trying to get me for. I wasn’t there. That’s why you don’t see me.”
The teen requested an attorney and was taken to juvenile detention. He later plead guilty to second degree murder and received the maximum juvenile sentence and will remain behind bars until he’s 21.
