BLM: Blue-green algae found in the Rio Grande

Date:

NEW MEXICO (KRQE) – The Taos Bureau of Land Management said there is a toxic species of algae now found in the Rio Grande. Blue-green algae can form in shallow, warm, nutrient-rich water that receives lots of sunlight.

Most blue-green algae are safe, but people should be aware that toxic conditions can exist, and people, and pets should limit their contact with the algae. The BLM Taos Field Office said direct contact with toxic algae can irritate the skin, mouth, and nose, and can even cause liver or kidney damage in some. Visitors are asked to exercise caution.
