Barrett House residents in Albuquerque get free makeover before Mother’s Day

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – It was a helping hand for some of the metro area’s most vulnerable women on Friday as two businesses offered their services for free to help women at a metro-area shelter get a fresh new look before Mother’s Day.

“It brings back beautiful memories,” said Edith Herrera, resident at Barrett House.

Great memories were all brought back by simply getting her hair done. It’s a luxury Herrera says she hasn’t been able to afford for years after losing her husband and then ending up homeless because she could no longer afford rent.  “He was my life, I’m very lost without him,” said Herrera.

But on Friday Edith took some time for self-care. “Oh wow…. oh yes!,” said Herrera after seeing her makeover.

Waxing the City and Blo Blow Dry Bar providing free services all in honor of Mother’s Day to Herrera and 12 other women at the Barrett House. “We as women know there’s nothing that makes you feel as good as having your hair and makeup done or having beautiful eyebrows,” said Jessica Carothers, owner of Waxing the City & Blo Blow Dry Bar.

The services boosted the confidence of those women at the shelter. “I’m going to look great for work tonight and I feel like a million bucks,” said Carrie Hurley, resident at Barrett House.

“I love myself right now more than I ever have in my entire life and I’m doing really good right now,” said Dakota Atkins another resident at Barrett House.

It’s a goal everyone was hoping to achieve.”Today’s goal is just to make sure everyone who sits in one of these chairs just leaves feeling really good about themselves,” said Holly Durante, Barrett Foundation Development Director.

The women said they were ready to show the world their new look. “My confidence is just like I’m ready to go out and eat lunch I feel amazing,” said Atkins.

The Barrett House says they are working with Waxing the City and Blo Blow Dry Bar to continue these services for years to come.
