Argument over green chile enchiladas escalates to homicide investigation
22-year-old Ervin Gutierrez turned himself in to police on Saturday. He has been charged with murder.
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. —
A disagreement over the heat of green chile enchiladas led to a fatal shooting Friday in northeast Albuquerque.
A spokesperson for Albuquerque Police says 22-year-old Ervin Gutierrez got into a fight with a relative, Nathaniel Cavazos. Court records say the fight took place after Gutierrez claimed that the green chiles in his enchiladas were hotter than the green chiles Cavazos made for himself and another person.
According to court records, Cavazos attempted to walk away from Gutierrez once the fight ended. Gutierrez pulled out a gun and shot Cavazos at least once after the two men began to argue. Cavazos died at the scene.
Gutierrez is being held at Metropolitan Detention Center on a murder charge. He made his first court appearance on Saturday. His case now moves to Second District Court, where a detention hearing will be held next week.
