I UNDERSTAND THAT REPORTER ALYSSA MUNOZ JOINS US LIVE. ALYSSA, YOU SPOKE WITH ALBUQUERQUE PUBLIC SCHOOL LEADERS ABOUT HOW STUDENTS CAN DEAL WITH THIS. I DID ROYALE MIGUEL, YOU KNOW, APS SAYS THAT OFTEN AROUND THIS TIME OF YEAR, THEY NOTICE STUDENTS HAVE LOW CONCENTRATION OR THEY PROCRASTINATE. THEY WANT TO HELP THEM FINISH STRONG. NOW, FOR ELEMENTARY SCHOOL TEACHERS, THEY USE VISUAL GOALS SUCH AS CHECKLISTS, BREAKS, AND POSITIVE SELF-TALK TO HELP. MIDDLE SCHOOL TEACHERS ARE TRYING TO USE PEER TO PEER CONNECTION AND TALKING ABOUT SLEEP AWARENESS. NOW, HIGH SCHOOL TEACHERS ARE HELPING BY CELEBRATING ACCOMPLISHMENTS AND HELPING VISUALIZE GRADUATION AND POSITIVITY. NOW, HERE’S HOW PARENTS CAN HELP. SLEEP AWARENESS IS CRITICAL. AND THEN ALSO REALLY HAVING SOME REFLECTIVE QUESTIONING. SO RATHER THAN SAYING HOW IS YOUR DAY? IS WHAT WAS YOUR CHALLENGE? WHAT WAS CHALLENGING FOR YOU TODAY? OR WHAT DID YOU ENJOY ABOUT HAVING A LITTLE BIT MORE REFLECTIVE OPPORTUNITIES WITH PARENTS TO BE ABLE TO THINK ABOUT THAT AND THEN ALSO CELEBRATE WITH THEIR WITH THEIR CHILD AS WELL. As the school year continues, Albuquerque Public Schools (APS) is addressing student burnout, which often manifests as low concentration and procrastination, by implementing strategies to help students finish strong.Elementary teachers are using visual goal-setting techniques, such as checklists, breaks, and positive self-talk, to support students. Middle school teachers are focusing on peer-to-peer connections and discussing sleep awareness. High school teachers are celebrating accomplishments and helping students visualize graduation and positivity.Kenneth Salazar, Associate Superintendent for School Climate and Support at APS, said here’s a tip for parents: “Sleep awareness is critical. Then, also really having some reflective questioning. So rather than saying ‘How was your day? What was challenging for you today? Or what did you enjoy about today?’ Having a little bit more reflective opportunities, with parents to be able to think about that and then also celebrate with their child as well,” Salazar said.Salazar also noted that 71 APS schools have seen a decrease in chronic absences.
