Finnish metal legends Amorphis have released “Dancing Shadow,” the new single from their upcoming studio album Borderland, due out September 26, 2025 via Reigning Phoenix Music. The track follows the previously acclaimed singles “Bones” and “Moonlight Shore,” and arrives alongside a stylish black-and-white music video from renowned visual director Patric Ullaeus.
“Dancing Shadow” blends haunting introspection with danceable groove, showcasing the band’s unique ability to balance weighty emotion with rhythmic, melodic flair. According to Amorphis guitarist Esa Holopainen, the song’s original working title was “Disco Tiger” – a hint at the energetic, genre-bending elements that now define the track.
“Musically it represents catchiness and hooks that have been familiar elements within our music for a long time,” Holopainen explains. “Sound-wise it came out pretty fresh and even modern. I bet this song will shake your legs on the dance floor — in a metal disco, of course.”
Amorphis drummer Jan Rechberger adds that the track marks a creative milestone for the band, who’ve been redefining themselves for over 30 years: “With ‘Dancing Shadow,’ we stepped into completely new territory. For a band with over three decades behind us, that kind of reinvention feels meaningful.”
Lyrically, “Dancing Shadow” reflects on life’s uncertain, shadowy moments — a theme that invites listeners to escape emotional turmoil by finding light in unexpected places. Longtime Amorphis collaborator Pekka Kainulainen penned the album’s lyrics, continuing his deep storytelling partnership with the band.
Recorded at Hansen Studios in Denmark (home to iconic metal acts like Volbeat, Amaranthe, and Primal Fear), Borderland is shaping up to be a defining chapter in the band’s discography. The album’s artwork was created by Dutch visual artist Marald Van Haasteren, known for his work with Metallica, Black Sabbath, Kvelertak, and Alcest.
