Albuquerque man sentenced to prison for deadly shooting at gas station in 2021

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – An Albuquerque man was sentenced to prison on Thursday for a deadly shooting at a gas station in the city.

Darrien Mells pleaded guilty to second-degree murder for killing 32-year-old Rodrick Thompson at the Chevron Gas station at San Mateo Boulevard and Indian School Road in August 2021. According to court documents, Thompson and his wife stopped at the gas station and Thompson got into an argument with Mells.

Mells pulled out a gun and shot Thompson in the head. In court on Thursday, Mells’ attorney said that his client regrets what happened.

Judge Clara Moran sentenced Mells to 16-and-a-half years in prison.
