Tuesday’s Five Facts
[1] ACS workers say the city owes them money in pay dispute – The Albuquerque Community Safety Department is facing a new lawsuit after some workers claim the city owes them money. Six former and five current employees filed a complaint in federal court, claiming the city violated the Fair Labor Standards Act. The suit claims the city made ACS workers salaried employees instead of hourly workers and did not pay them the time-and-a-half rate for overtime. A city spokesperson responded in a statement saying in part, “All responders have transitioned from salaried to hourly positions to better reflect the nature of their work, including overtime pay.”
[2] Rail Yards Market exploring adding a permanent daily market space – The Rail Yards Market has been held every Sunday since 2014. Director Alaska Piper says she sees a future with it open all week. Piper says a daily market would be anchored by well-established vendors and newer entrepreneurs. while the market says its working on the idea, there is no timeline one when a full-time market could open.
[3] Low rain chances with even hotter temperatures – Even hotter weather moves in Tuesday as high pressure settles into the state. The high pressure system will keep the entire state hot and mostly dry. Temperatures will continue to hover near record levels through at least Friday. Temperatures around the Albuquerque Metro could hit 100° as early as Tuesday afternoon,
[4] University of New Mexico finalizes energy sustainability project – The University of New Mexico and Lobo Energy and Energy Systems Group have completed a project that will deliver key energy upgrades across the UNM South Campus. To mark the milestone, a new solar carport at the UNM Championship Golf Course was unveiled. The project also includes new LED lights and HVAC equipment.
[5] CABQ pools return to fall/winter schedules – All City-owned indoor pools are returning to off-season hours. Outdoor pools will operate on a reduced schedule through Labor Day due to less demand, staffing, and funding as school begins. Montgomery and East San Jose pools are closed for the season. Eisenhower, Sierra Vista and Wilson pools are only open on weekends through September 1. Rio Grande Pool will remain open on weekdays from 11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. for lap swimming through September 1.
