A Magazine Tracked Down The Girl From The Iconic DEFTONES Album Cover For Around The Fur

Date:

Jenkem Magazine posted a YouTube video yesterday that actually tracked down the girl on the iconic Deftones album, Around The Fur, released in 1997. And nearly 28 years later, after interviewing both the skate photographer Rick Kosick (also known for his work with Jackass) and the art director Kevin Reagan for the Deftones‘ label, the publication were able to find Lisa Hughes, the woman on the cover.

Saying that she knew people around Seattle, and would often go to after parties after the bars had closed down, she ended up back at Deftones‘ rental condo for a party she had idea she’d even be professionally photographed at, let alone have that photo end up on one of alternative’s most distinctive records. Hughes stated that she didn’t really know who the Deftones were at the time, she had just been a friend of guitarist Stephen Carpenter.

She said in the newest video that (as transcribed by thePRP), “”found those articles, you know, about like [me allegedly] being a groupie and this and that,”” when news originally broke of Hughes‘ identity in 2020, “And I was like, maybe I should just start a little page just about myself and so people know that I’m Lisa. I’m just this awesome chick from Auburn [Washington], and I like to have fun. And there’s no groupie action going on here. Just me having a kick-ass time, you know?

It’s a pretty cool looking shot, right? Like with the fisheye lens just looking down. You know, it’s kind of risqué a little bit with my breasts, and people have asked, ‘Oh, look, you got a pimple there.’ I’m like, ‘Who gives a sh*t?’ What does that really matter? I’m a human being. I’m not a model and I could care less really. That’s me. It’s just cool looking. And if you look at the whole shot and the legs going into the hot tub, it just looks pretty awesome.”
