The number of syphilis cases in New Mexico has dropped over 32% in the past three years.
The New Mexico Department of Health has continued its expanded testing to protect newborns from contracting it from their mothers.
The disease is capable of causing birth defects and, in some cases, death.
“Congenital syphilis is preventable, but it’s potentially a tragic outcome for babies and for families that we really have to try to avert,” says Andrews Gans, Communicable Disease Bureau chief for the New Mexico Department of Health.
Even though numbers are turning in the right direction, New Mexico’s cases remain among the highest in the nation.
