Balloon Fiesta in Albuquerque celebrates first-timers and family traditions

Thousands gathered at Balloon Fiesta Park in Albuquerque to enjoy the International Balloon Fiesta, with attendees ranging from first-time visitors to longtime participants.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. —

The Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta brought thousands of attendees to Balloon Fiesta Park early this morning, celebrating both newcomers and families continuing long-standing traditions.

For one visitor, it was her first time at the fiesta and her first visit to New Mexico.

“Everything looks really cool. We were here last night for the glow up. It was pretty awesome. So it was my first time seeing all the designs and stuff. It was really neat,” she said.

She also shared her enthusiasm for New Mexico’s food.

“You can’t beat a breakfast burrito. The food has been amazing, but I think I’m a green sauce girl,” she said.

Nearby, little Javier celebrated his first birthday. His mother, Jessica, has been attending the fiesta for about 15 years.

“Honestly, it’s the people. I mean, I like waking up at 6:00 in the morning. I’m an early bird,” Jessica said.

Jessica said Javier was already captivated by the event.

“He’s interested in, like, the fire to warm up the balloons, and he gets all excited when they start taking off in the air and everything,” she said.

While many balloons filled the sky, some special shapes, including Yoda and Darth Vader, remained grounded due to wind conditions.

“The direction was not the best for us because we need place for landing over there, and it’s only a teeny place,” Yoda pilot Benoit Lambert, said.

With seven more days of festivities ahead, attendees still have opportunities to see the balloons, including those from a galaxy far, far away.

Tomorrow, the fiesta will celebrate New Mexico Day, offering free general admission to New Mexico residents with a valid photo ID or a utility bill showing a local address. Parking will remain $20, cash only.
