Lobos fail to get into the end zone after loss to Oklahoma
Despite forcing three turnovers, the Lobos fall to Oklahoma 14-6
The University of New Mexico Lobos came up short in their upset bid against No. 24 Oklahoma, losing 14-6 Saturday, Sept. 19.
UNM started off strong, intercepting Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer on the third play of the game. Special teams also became a factor with 6:33 left in the first quarter the Lobos would punt the ball to Sooner returner Isaiah Sategna III but he would muff it and UNM would recover it on Oklahoma’s 39-yard line.
In the second quarter Oklahoma would finally get on the board scoring on a 12-play 80-yard drive. The Lobos’ defense would step up again, with 3:09 left in the quarter, Lobos cornerback Frankie Edwards III would intercept John Mateer again. UNM would be able to convert two field goals in the quarter and would go into halftime only being down 7-6.
Lobos did get the ball to start the second half but wouldn’t be able to capitalize, stalling with an eight-play-eight yard drive that lasted 5:08. Oklahoma on their first drive in the second half, would score on a five-play-70 yard drive, ending with a 53 yard touchdown pass from Mateer to Sategna III.
In the fourth quarter the Lobos offense would have a shot at tying the game with 10:32 left down 14-6. UNM would drive 47 yards only to be stopped on a fourth-and-two play forcing a turnover on downs. The Lobos offensively struggled against one of the top defenses in all of college football, going 3-for-14 of third downs and would total only 185 yards of total offense.
UNM now moves to 2-1 as they are set to play in the Rio Grande Rivalry against the New Mexico State Aggies in Las Cruces. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:30 on Saturday, Sept. 26.
