Woman sentenced in 2-year-old’s shooting death
Angel Cordova was sentenced by a judge on Sept. 15 to 18 months behind bars.
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. —
Albuquerque police have arrested a mother in connection to the shooting death of a 2-year-old at an apartment in Albuquerque.
Police say 20-year-old Amillia Garcia told investigators she heard a loud “bang” when she was in another room. She then went into another room in the apartment and found her son injured by a gunshot.
Police say a gun with an extended clip was found near the child’s body.
Officers arrived to the apartment on Sunday afternoon after another person, Angelica Lucero, called 9-1-1 and told dispatchers a boy was accidentally shot.
Police officials say officers attempted to revive the child, but he ultimately died at the scene.
Police detained Garcia, Lucero and Lucero’s boyfriend Angel Cordova.
Police say Cordova left the apartment at the urged Cordova to leave the apartment after the shooting because he was on probation. Cordova came back to the apartment with two firearms in the bag. Police said one of the guns was the gun that is believed to be involved in the shooting.
Police say Garcia told detectives that the handgun belonged to her after she bought it on the street for protection due to domestic disputes with a family member.
Police charged Garcia with child abuse resulting in death and tampering with evidence.
Police also charged three others in relation to the shooting:
- Angelica Lucero – tampering with evidence
- Angel Cordova – tampering with evidence and being a felon in possession of a firearm
- Angel Morales – tampering with evidence
Angel Cordova was sentenced by a judge on Sept. 15 to 18 months behind bars. The child’s mother, Amilia Garcia, also pleaded guilty and is expected to spend a decade behind bars.
