Forgotten Heroes Funeral honoring 50 unclaimed veterans
50 unclaimed veterans will be honored with a ceremony and military burial Thursday
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. —
Fifty U.S. military veterans whose remains went unclaimed will be remembered and laid to rest with full military honors Thursday through New Mexico’s Forgotten Heroes Funeral Program.
The program ensures veterans receive a dignified military funeral honoring their service and sacrifice. The ceremonies are being coordinated by the New Mexico Department of Veterans’ Services, Bernalillo County, the New Mexico National Guard and Santa Fe National Cemetery.
A memorial ceremony will begin at 9 a.m. at Legacy Church, 4701 Wyoming Blvd. NE, in Albuquerque.
Following the memorial, law enforcement officers and motorcycle groups representing veterans’ service organizations will escort the veterans’ urns to Santa Fe National Cemetery.
The military burial with full honors will begin at 11 a.m. at the cemetery, located at 501 N. Guadalupe St. in Santa Fe.
Both ceremonies are open to the public and will provide New Mexicans an opportunity to pay their respects to the veterans.
