Former UNM running back looking to build on his rookie year in NFL

Jacory “Bill” Croskey-Merritt is gearing up for year two with the Washington Commanders. The former University of New Mexico running back spent one year with the Lobos in 2023, two years later was drafted in the seventh round by the Commanders.

In his rookie year, Croskey-Merritt ran for 805 yards on 175 carries, scoring eight touchdowns on the ground. He said he’s been working on being a better version of himself entering his second year. “Just letting the game come to me,” Croskey-Merritt said. “Not overthinking just going out there and do what I’ve been doing my whole life.”

Last year the Washington Commanders failed to make the playoffs and finished the regular season with a 5-12 record, and Croskey-Merritt said it’s a new year. ” Last year, that happened and it’s about what we do this year,” said Croskey-Merritt. “That’s just been the vibe and it’s time to display it now.”

The Commanders’ first game of the season was against the reigning NFC East division champions, the Philadelphia Eagles. However, Croskey-Merritt said he and the team try to treat every game the same. “No game is bigger than any other,” said Croskey-Merritt. “We treat every game the same way and we prepare the same.” He said fans will see a different team when they kick off Sunday, September 13 against the Eagles. “They’ll see a brotherhood,” Croskey-Merritt said. “When you’ve got a brotherhood, you’re going to see a team go out there and fight each and every week. That’s what they can expect, a brotherhood.”

The Commanders lost to the Eagles 24-22 but Croskey-Merritt carried the ball 16 times for 63 yards and a touchdown.

Croskey-Merritt said he claims to be a Lobo and still appreciates all the Lobo fans. “They’ve always been with me since I stepped on campus,” said Croskey-Merritt. “I appreciate y’all sticking with me, and it’s going to be a good journey.” “Being a Lobo is tough, tough and fun.”
