Santa Fe police are increasing security measures for the annual Burning of Zozobra, which is set to take place in just over a week at Fort Marcy Park.

“We’re very fortunate to have great colleagues,” Santa Fe Interim Police Chief Ben Valdez told KOAT 7.

“In law enforcement, public safety, emergency management, even the National Weather Service, they’re coming out to those events to help keep everyone safe,” Valdez said.

This year, more than 50,000 people are projected to attend the iconic New Mexico event, in which revelers watch as a giant effigy of Old Man Gloom is burned.

The burning of Zozobra on Sept. 4 is set to be followed by the Fiestas de Santa Fe celebrations, including the historic parade and closing ceremony on Sept. 13.
