Secret Service officials placed on leave in inquiry over ‘potential misconduct’

Date:

Secret Service communications director Anthony Guglielmi has been placed on leave, two sources familiar with the matter told NBC News on Wednesday.

The news comes as a Secret Service spokesperson revealed that three officials who are not law enforcement personnel were put on leave pending an investigation into potential misconduct.

Gregg Bernstein, a spokesperson for Guglielmi, did not expressly say he was on leave, saying merely that he is a “professional of deep integrity whose decades-long public record advocating for local, state and federal agencies speaks for itself.”

“He holds profound respect for the mission and work of the United States Secret Service and is cooperating fully with everything being asked of him,” Bernstein said in a statement.

CNN first reported the inquiry.

In its statement, the Secret Service did not disclose what prompted the investigation or identify the officials. It said it will continue to “pursue the level of excellence that is worthy” of the organization’s mission.

“The U.S. Secret Service is committed to upholding the highest standards of professionalism and integrity in fulfilling our zero-fail mission of protecting the President and other high-level government officials,” it said.

The spokesperson added, “Our critical work demands that our workforce maintain an unwavering commitment to duty, honesty, and courage in all aspects of their jobs.”

Guglielmi was named communications director in March 2022. He testified before the House Jan. 6 committee later that year, discussing former White House aide Cassidy Hutchinson’s testimony to the panel.
